SUNUNU: AMERICANS NEED NEW TAX CODE,

NOT $1.2 TRILLION TAX INCREASE IN DEMOCRATS BUDGET

WASHINGTON, DC – United States Senator John Sununu (R-NH), a member of the Senate Finance Committee, issued the following statement as taxpayers in New Hampshire and across the country work to meet the April 15 deadline on filing tax returns:

“Americans don’t need new tax forms – we need a new tax code. I have championed fundamental tax reform since my first term in Congress. Today, in the Senate Finance Committee, we heard experts from both sides of the aisle agree that reform must be our priority. We need a tax code that’s simple, honest, and fair. Instead, we have rules that change every year, many that expire in one or two years, and three different systems, one for those who itemize deductions, one for those who don’t, and an Alternative Minimum Tax, which affects thousands it was never intended to cover.

“Unfortunately, rather than reform, Congressional Democrats have offered the largest tax increase in history – a $1.2 trillion hike included in the 2009 Budget Plan. These higher taxes would have very real impacts: 27 million small businesses would pay more; 18 million seniors would pay more; and 43 million families would pay more. That’s wrong for the economy, and it’s the wrong message for tax day.”
