SUNUNU ATTACKS THE SIERRA CLUB

(Manchester, NH) - In a desperate attempt to cover up his own disastrous environmental record, John E. Sununu yesterday issued an ill-informed and unjustified attack on the nation's oldest grassroots environmental group, the Sierra Club.

After the group announced its support for Sununu's opponent former Governor Jeanne Shaheen yesterday, Sununu lashed out, calling the Sierra Club "a Washington Interest Group" and a "D.C. lobbyist group." [Sununu Press Release, 4/24/08]

"John Sununu calling the New Hampshire Sierra Club a 'D.C. lobbyist group' does a real injustice to our 45,000 grassroots members and supporters in New Hampshire who care very deeply about protecting New Hampshire's environment," said Jim Allmendinger, Vice Chair of the NH Sierra Club Political Committee.

The Sierra Club was founded in 1892 and boasts 45,000 members and supporters in New Hampshire alone. The group's goals include promoting the responsible use of the earth's ecosystems and resources, and educating and enlisting citizens to protect and restore the quality of the natural and human environment.

"Sununu may be disappointed he didn't win the Sierra Club's endorsement, but he needs to focus more on fighting for the issues important to them, such as ending global warming and protecting the environment," said Alex Reese, press secretary for the NHDP's Coordinated Campaign. "Instead, Sununu has chosen to throw ill-informed insults at them, when the reality is that there are 45,000 of Sununu's own constituents in New Hampshire that are Sierra Club members and supporters."

What's the record Sununu is trying to hide with his misguided attacks on the nation's oldest environmental group?
