Statement by New Hampshire AFL-CIO President Mark MacKenzie
On John McCain's Health Care Proposal
April 30, 2008

Yesterday John McCain proposed a health care plan that is nothing more than a creative new tax on working people.  His plan would give the big insurance companies even more power over our health care and raise costs on working families who are already strapped in this increasingly sour economy.

McCain's voting record shows he's not standing with working people on the issues that matter.  He supported legislation that gave HMOs the final say in patients care, not the doctors and the patient themselves.  He voted against providing health care for our children in the SCHIP program.  He voted for enormous cuts to Medicare and Medicaid.

Meanwhile, working families are falling behind and the high cost for health care is one of the reasons.  Too many are uninsured, and a majority of those who are insured are spending far too much money out of pocket on basic medical needs.  New Hampshire families should not have to choose between paying their utility bills, filling their gas tank or paying for health care..  We need a common-sense health care policy we can count on to be affordable and accessible for everyone, which is the exact opposite of what John McCain offered Americans today. We call on Sen. McCain to offer real reform that addresses the health care crisis and helps working families access the quality, affordable care we deserve.
