SUNUNU THINKS $9,300,000,000,000 DEBT IS FISCALLY CONSERVATIVE

Makes absurd political attacks to distract from his steadfast support of Bush's disastrous fiscal and economic record

(Manchester, NH) - In a desperate attempt to cover up his record of marching in lock-step with George Bush's radically irresponsible fiscal policies, Sununu yesterday lashed out at former Governor and current U.S. Senate candidate Jeanne Shaheen. After once again voting with Bush against the 2008 Farm Bill yesterday, Sununu attacked Shaheen and claimed his vote was based on fiscal responsibility, even though he has voted for every George Bush budget that has put the country into a $9.3 trillion national debt.

"Sununu's claim that he's a fiscal conservative is absurd. If spending taxpayer money were an Olympic event, John Sununu would be headed to China," said Alex Reese, press secretary for the NHDP's Coordinated Campaign. "These attacks are a desperate attempt to distract from his record of following Bush into reckless spending, sky high deficits, and the largest national debt in the history of mankind. John Sununu is part of the problem: He voted yesterday against preventing Wall Street speculators from driving up gas prices, against investments in alternative energies to bring down the price of gas, and against investment in rural communities like New Hampshire's North Country."

John E. Sununu is Part of the Problem: Standing with Bush on the 2008 Farm Bill
Here are just some of the things Sununu attempted to block with his no vote on yesterday's 2008 Farm Bill:

GAS PRICES: AVERAGE $3.71 PER GALLON

  • Sununu voted AGAINST $1 billion to promote biofuels and break our addiction to foreign oil. The money included support for wood-based ethanol that could stimulate jobs right here in New Hampshire.
  • Sununu voted AGAINST closing the Enron loophole, which allows Wall Street to drive up the price of gas through market manipulation and speculation.

HIGH COST OF FOOD: GROCERIES EXPERIENCE LARGEST 1 QUARTER JUMP IN 18 YEARS

  • Sununu voted AGAINST emergency funding for food banks. Despite his photo-op at the Manchester food bank earlier this week, Sununu decided to stand with Bush instead of New Hampshire's food banks.
  • Sununu voted AGAINST decreasing subsidies to corn-based ethanol, despite paying lip-service earlier this week to middle-class families by blaming ethanol for the high price of food.

TAX BREAKS: $13 BILLION FOR BIG OIL, $0 FOR RENEWABLE ENERGY
Sununu opposed tax subsidies for renewable energy that could be produced right here in New Hampshire, but he's perfectly happy to run up the national debt in order to subsidize oil and gas companies.

  • Sununu cast the deciding vote TO PROTECT $13 billion in tax breaks for oil and gas companies instead of investing that money in renewable energy. [Senate Vote #425, 12/17/05]
  • Sununu has accepted $221,030 in campaign contributions from oil and gas companies. [Center for Responsive Politics - FEC Filings]

New Hampshire is ready for a Senator who works to solve problems instead of being a part of them. Sununu's negative attacks can't cover up his record of voting with George Bush 90% of the time, of voting for record national debt even as the economy falters, and of sending billions in tax breaks to oil and gas companies instead of investing in renewable energy and creating jobs right here in New Hampshire.
