JEANNE SHAHEEN FILES FOR UNITED STATES SENATE, DISCUSSES NEED FOR NEW DIRECTION IN WASHINGTON
(Manchester, NH) —Former Governor and current U.S. Senate candidate Jeanne Shaheen filed today for the United States Senate in Concord. Joined by her daughters and her grandson, Nicholas, Shaheen filed her candidacy with the Secretary of State and spoke with supporters on the State House steps, discussing the need for change, a new direction in Washington and a voice in the Senate who will speak for New Hampshire's interests, not the special interests.
"This is a critical moment for our state, our families, our country," Shaheen said. "For years, we have watched as Washington has put the special interests first and left middle class families behind. Well, it's time for a new direction."
"One Senator can make a difference. One vote in the Senate defeated the energy bill that would have taken the billions of dollars in tax breaks we are giving Big Oil and reinvested them in developing clean, alternative energy source. One vote defeated legislation to begin withdrawing our troops from Iraq. One vote could have defeated the override of President Bush's veto of stem cell research expansion. We are tired of a Senator whose one vote doesn't represent us.
"We can't sit on the sidelines any longer. The time to act is now. We have big challenges facing us, but I have no doubt that we are up to the task. We are ready for a new direction and there is no time to waste. It is long past time for New Hampshire to have a Senator who won't just be part of the problem, but who will work to solve problems."
