Bradley, Stephen trade barbs over nursing homes

The 1st Congressional District Republican primary has shifted to whether candidate John Stephen (R-Manchester) increased property taxes by shifting the cost of operating nursing homes onto property owners when he was the state's former Health and Human Services secretary.

"This cost shifting is a shell game," Bradley said.  "He simply transferred state expense to local property tax payers. John pads his books, sticks property taxpayers with the bill and in so doing pushes our state ever closer to a sales or income tax. That's not leadership, that's gamesmanship."

Stephen is competing against former U.S. Rep. Jeb Bradley (R-Wolfeboro), who lost the 1st district seat to Democrat Carol Shea-Porter in 2006.

According to Foster's Daily Democrat, Stephen said after the debate that the cost was not his problem.

"Actually John, it is your problem, or should be. Take responsibility for your actions. That is the sign of a true leader," Bradley said in a statement.

In an e-mail, Stephen said that he saved New Hampshire taxpayers $143 million.

"Congressman- I'll take responsibility for the $143 million I saved New Hampshire's taxpayers and you can take responsibility for over $1.3 trillion in deficit spending while you were in Congress.

"We need change. Not Washington politicians going for one last desperate chance at self glory."

Jeb Bradley's Audacity

Jeb Bradley has the audacity to criticize John Stephen after loosing the 2006 congressional race to who? Carol Shea-Porter the “accidental congress women”.

After learning that Jeb held $295,000 in his 2006 campaign that he did not spend, and then after loosing the race to the “accidental congress women” Carol Shea-Porter, he gave bonuses to his staff from money he raised from his New Hampshire Republican constituents, Yes bonuses!

I am convinced that Jeb is a disgrace to the Republican Party and should withdraw from the race, and go back to his prior vocation of being a magician. Given his tax and spend performance in Washington, and given that he rewarded his employees for loosing the 2006 race, Jeb Bradley needs to pack it in and let a true conservative professional face Carol Shea-Porter in the fall.

Jeb, do yourself and the people of New Hampshire a favor and quit now before you do any more damage to our party.

Brian Lawson please investigate

Did Jeb really bonus money to his staff after losing? I want to know if this was true, I'm a Jeb contributor and supporter, but this is unacceptable - if it's true.

Brian Lawson you should investigate this and let us know the truth before you go after possibly the better candidate. I am tiered of the same old games and want an answer. Why didn't this money get used to advertise on TV or/and mailings?

If it walks like a

If it walks like a beauracrat, looks, talks and acts like a beauracrat, than it must be a beauracrat. "Not my problem" that kind of statement could only come from someone that has been working inside the redtape for a lifetime. John, why don't you go spend a few years in the public sector and learn what its like to have a real job before trying to convince us youre a leader and not just a bean counter.

Jeb Bradley is a true

Jeb Bradley is a true conservative who can bring the needed change to Washington. Bradley has served his time, done his work with veterans, education, and social issues in New Hampshire.

As long as Jeb isn't sending out franked mail I am a supporter.

If taxes are in issue here,

If taxes are in issue here, please look at Shea-porter's track record.

She has voted for the longest tax hikes in history.

Go Jeb

The NH Property tax payer

The NH Property tax payer has been getting screwed by the local towns, the counties, and the state. Everyone has been doing it to us, why not John Stephen too?

Jeb Bradley

If Jeb Bradley was a true conservative why didn't he bring the needed change to Washington when we gave him the opportunity to represent us for two terms in Congress? Given that their was a Republican in the White House and a Republican majority in congress during his first term, he did little or nothing to represent us in any meaningful manner.

He opposed drilling for oil in the US, but now drilling is OK. I love the flip flop when it’s convenient. Jeb funded a teapot museum, and gave his staff bonuses out of our donated money, after loosing the race to Carol Shea-Porter

If Jeb did the right thing five years ago maybe gas wouldn't be over $4.00 per gallon and heating oil over $4.60 per gallon.

Jeb Bradley has served his time, has done little for the citizens of New Hampshire, and lost to a light weight Carol Shea-Porter two years ago.

Jeb, should withdraw from the race, and go back to his prior vocation of being a magician. Rest assured I will do my utmost to send Jeb back to Wolfeboro!
