Bob Clegg's Bariatric Bill Becomes LawObesity related diseases will continue to be covered
Concord, NH - Bob Clegg's legislation to ensure obesity related diseases and ailments are covered by insurance, including bariatric surgery, will become law in New Hampshire. After many months of discussion, and dedication from several members of the New Hampshire Legislature, the bill to require health insurance companies to cover the potentially
life-saving procedure passed through the Governor's Office.
"We'd like to thank the Governor for his independence on this issue," Clegg said. "While there has been much misinformation, the Governor was willing to look at the issue and act accordingly. Letting the bill become law shows there is confidence in the legislature and the bipartisanship shown in the process this piece of legislation went through. This bill will reduce the cost of health insurance because it focuses on prevention of catastrophic diseases."
Clegg, who himself had the surgery, has successfully lost more than 100
pounds and seen much improved health since the procedure including a reduced
risk from diabetes, lung, heart and other potential illnesses. Clegg had to
pay for the surgery out of his own pocket, a luxury many Americans do not
have. This legislation will now allow for a healthy and improved life for
many obese people unable to previously receive the proper treatment.
State Representative Lee Quandt, of Exeter, sponsored the bill in the House
and says this legislation will now allow for a healthy and improved life for
many obese people unable to previously receive the proper treatment. "Most
people suffering from obesity have exhausted all other options before
looking to surgery for help. Yo-yoing, unsuccessful, dieting can be as
unhealthy for the body as the obesity itself. Now, those who have tried
every other option, have a new one that can improve their lifestyles and
potentially save their lives."
