www.joinjim2008.com PUTTING REAL EXPERIENCE TO WORK; A RECORD OF PROUD SERVICE TO THE COUNTRY.JIM STEINER, A MAN OF SUBSTANCE. BRINGING A FOUNDATION OF INTEGRITY AND LEADERSHIP TO CONGRESS.
PRO LIFE: Jim Steiner is pro life. PRO MARRIAGE: Jim believes marriage is between a man and a woman. PRO SECOND AMENDMENT: Jim Steiner has always believed that the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution preserves for all Americans the private right to keep and bear arms. The Heller decision by our U.S. Supreme Court got it correct.AN ENERGY PLAN THAT WORKS: The United States requires a national energy plan aimed at achieving energy independence. That priority needs to be on the same level that we placed putting a man on the moon. It is critical to the strength of our dollar in the global community and the intersection of energy with national security.
Short-term steps, summer 2008
- Suspend the 18.4 Cents/Gallon Gas Tax through October 2008.
- Open the ethanol market by eliminating the tariff on ethanol.
- Release 1/3d of the strategic oil reserve into the market.
Long-Term steps, to gain energy independence.
- Develop New Refineries. No matter the supply sources, the narrowest point in the movement of oil from wells to gas pumps is the current limitations in number of refineries and the volume capable of being produced.
- New nuclear plants and nuclear fuel recycling. Nuclear energy should be a "leg" of a balanced energy plan. Recycling captures 95% of spent fuel.
- Limited Drilling in ANWR, the continental shelf and the great plains.
Promote alternative energy development.
Develop a national conservation plan. EARMARKS/PORK BARREL LEGISLATION/UNFUNDED MANDATES: Jim Steiner does not support procedures that provide for artificial earmarks or pork barrel being inserted into law without debate, motion or independent vote. Open government requires an elimination of earmarks, and a demand the Congress follow a simple Roberts Rules of Order when it comes to emergency legislation – motion, second and vote. Giving the President of the United States line item veto power will hold a President accountable to the American people. BALANCED BUDGET: It is beyond time for the next Congress to tighten the belt and balance the budget. The government can no longer live on a credit card mentality. Those that exemplify spending first, borrowing against the future or loaning money they do not have on hand do not demonstrate the kind of fiscal conservatism necessary to serve well in control government spending.LAW ENFORCEMENT/CRIME: Being tough on crime should not be an exception. Local law enforcement is entitled to support from the federal government to promote anti-gang and anti-drug programs. BURDENSOME REGULATIONS: Too much of the cost to operate a business is spent on meeting federal regulations. A member of Congress must remember he or she has as much a duty to remove unnecessary regulation as to enact new laws. TAXES: The tax code is out of control. It is a burden on every class of Americans. It requires a wholesale overhaul to simplify, simplify and simplify. That said, such common deductions as benefit small business, homeowners and donations to charity are simple and effective tools for promoting economic growth and support of worthy causes. These deductions, among others, should remain in place.
HEALTH CARE:
It is not just the fact that many Americans lack insurance coverage, but it is the fact that small business is being strangled by substantial increases to premiums each year. Health care needs to be made portable for employees, and portable state to state to increase quality while decreasing costs.
HOMELAND SECURITY: From hurricanes to terrorist attacks, first responders must be prepared to assist communities and must be able to communicate with one another. Our first responders need to be prepared before the next crisis strikes.
DEFENSE: Our military ensures the protection of our constitutional rights. Four percent for freedom is a reasonable budget allowance to allow our military to re-equip and to take care of our soldiers serving us today. Our country remains the home of the free so long as Congress supports our military. GLOBAL WAR ON TERRORISM: Radical muslim extremists will not stop attacking United States interests until they are defeated. This is a stateless war. Those countries that harbor and support radical extremists devoted to attacking the United States should know they must withdraw their support or face all possible sanctions available against them, whether by the United Nations or an alliance led by the United States. VETERANS: During a trip to Israel following the engagement by the Israeli military with terrorist militias in southern Lebanon, Jim toured an Israeli military hospital and rehabilitation center. It was state of the art. Our veterans deserve the same first class treatment that Jim observed in Israel. A soldier's ID card should be all that is required in order to receive quality local medical service when the Veterans Administration lacks local facilities. Jim will be a tireless advocate for veterans.
ILLEGALS: The one thing accomplished by blanket amnesty is to encourage future illegals to enter the country and hope for the same treatment. Jim Steiner opposes amnesty.
EDUCATION AND THE ECONOMY: The quality of education we provide is directly proportional to the quality of the work force contributed annually to businesses to support our economy. The two are tied together. Our school districts should be directed by local control. The impact on the economy, with a more highly qualified work force, will be self-evident.
THE ENVIRONMENT: Congress has a duty to provide stewardship to our environment. A national conservation program, as part of an energy independence program, is essential both to our environment and our energy policy. NO PACs: Following the lead of Sen. Warren Rudman, Jim Steiner will take no PAC money in donations to his campaign. He is the only candidate to take such a pledge.
NATIONAL PUBLIC SERVICE:
As a young officer in the military, only one other soldier in Jim's infantry unit came from New Hampshire - Private Michael Allen, from Kingston, N.H.. The remaining 160 soldiers came from all across the United States. They quickly formed a cohesive identification as part of "Charlie Company two one," being Charlie Company, 2nd Battalion, First Infantry Regiment, the "Always First" regiment! More young people should have the opportunity to take advantage of public service, whether through military service, or nonmilitary service with such organizations as Americorps or the Peace Corps. Service to ones country helps young people appreciate more substantially than not the meaning of being American.
Accordingly Jim believes the incentives for public service should be increased to increase the pool of young people that think first to give public service for a couple of years after high school. The government should use its bully pulpit to encourage our universities and colleges to adopt tuition deferment in recognition of such service. The students then matriculating to college will be more mature and worldly, and more valuable as students
