Congressional candidates applaud pick

DENVER--Republican congressional candidates are commenting on the selection of Gov. Sarah Palin (R-Alaska) as the Republican vice-presidential nominee.

"This is a great choice and America should be proud," 2nd Congressional District candidate Jennifer Horn (R-Nashua) said in a press release. "As governor of Alaska, Sarah Palin has been a strong voice for the people; tackling high taxes, government waste and corruption. She has been a leader in the effort to reform what is wrong with the way government works."

Horn also said Palin "embodies the American woman today."

"As a former sportscaster, and both a mom and Governor of Alaska, she has shown that we can break through the glass ceiling while we are reminded that America continues to be the place of opportunity," Horn said. "Sarah Palin has dealt with issues both on the executive level and at the kitchen table level. We need more people like Sarah Palin willing to stand-up and serve their country."

Grant Bosse (R-Hillsboro), also running in the 2nd Congressional District, focused on Palin's record as governor.

"Governor Sarah Palin is a tremendous selection as John McCain's running mate. Governor Palin is a fresh political voice who is cleaning the culture of corruption in Alaska politics," Bosse said in a statement. "As both a mayor and governor, she has real executive experience, and rock-solid conservative credentials. She will provide real change in Washington, not the empty rhetoric of Barack Obama."

John Stephen, who is seeking the Republican nominations for the 1st Congressional District, had this to say:

"Sen. McCain made an excellent choice in picking Gov. Palin for Vice President. She is just the type of outsider we need in Washington today. She has a proven track record of fiscal discipline, strong leadership and support for the 2nd Amendment. As a hockey dad, I can truly appreciate having a hockey mom on the same ticket. She knows the struggles of Americans today and the need to find solutions for high energy prices and spiraling debt. She knows that the answers are in places like New Hampshire and Alaska, not in Washington. I commend Sen. McCain for thinking outside the box and finding a real outsider who can bring change."

Stephen's primary opponent, former U.S. Rep. Jeb Bradley, was similarly high on the pick.

"Senator McCain’s choice of Governor Sarah Palin as a running mate is a great choice leading us one step closer to victory in November. Governor Palin is a famed fiscal conservative and a maverick in her own right. We need tough action in Washington and Governor Palin will certainly bring that to the table" said Bradley.

Palin tackled higher taxes by...raising taxes?

I'll give Palin credit for being a reformer, and for telling the Alaska congressional delegation to be more judicious about earmarks. But she's not perfect by any means.

For example, I love Jennifer Horn's comment about Gov. Palin "tackling high taxes". The fact is, Governor Palin tackled supposedly high taxes by (drumroll please) raising taxes! Yep, she and the Alaska legislature implemented a windfall profits tax on oil companies, bringing in lots of money to the state:

Funny how the Republicans slammed Obama for his windfall profits tax proposal. Well, more pathetic than funny, but still...

Shaheen's campaign guilty of idiocy, too

Shaheen's campaign has been sending around the "Sununu Gas Pump" to his events, protesting the same windfall tax (that is, if they say what the hell the gas pump is there for). But what they won't tell you, is that Sen. Obama voted for the same tax in the Senate!
