JEANNE SHAHEEN TOURS PIKE INDUSTRIES WARM MIX ASPHALT PLANT, HIGHLIGHTS COMMITMENT TO FIGHTING TO PROTECT NEW HAMPSHIRE JOBS

(Portsmouth, NH) – Today, former Governor and current US Senate candidate Jeanne Shaheen toured the warm mix asphalt facility at Pike Industries in Portsmouth and discussed her commitment to fighting to protect New Hampshire jobs.  Under George Bush and John Sununu, New Hampshire residents have been paying more into the Federal Highway Trust Fund than they have been getting back and the fund has become dangerously close to going broke, jeopardizing millions of dollars in New Hampshire projects and thousands of New Hampshire jobs.

"We can create jobs here in New Hampshire by investing in our infrastructure and ensuring that New Hampshire gets its share of federal highway funding," Shaheen said.  "But we need a Senator who will fight for the resources we need instead of standing with George Bush to allow New Hampshire families to pay more into the fund than they are getting back.  As Governor, I invested in the development of our infrastructure to create jobs in New Hampshire and I will take that same fight to the US Senate because we need a new direction."

John Sununu has repeatedly stood with the Bush Administration against funding the national Highway Trust Fund, jeopardizing $52 million in New Hampshire projects and nearly 2,000 New Hampshire jobs.  Some of those projects include construction on the aging Memorial Bridge in Portsmouth and work on I-93 and the Manchester airport access road, all of which are important to strengthening New Hampshire's economy.

As Governor, Jeanne Shaheen strengthened the economy and helped to create 66,000 jobs by investing in the development of New Hampshire's infrastructure.  She will take the same commitment to job creation to the US Senate and fight for a new economic direction that breaks from the failed policies of George Bush and John Sununu.
