JANEWAY BACKTRACKS ON THE PLEDGE; DO OTHER DEMOCRATS?

JANEWAY BACKTRACKS ON THE PLEDGE;  DO OTHER DEMOCRATS?

CONCORD – In today’s Concord Monitor, State Senator Harold Janeway announced that he is not taking “The Pledge” against a sales or income tax.  From the Monitor:

“Janeway is not taking the traditional pledge against a sales and income tax in his race - in part, he said, to prove that it's not necessary to earn voters' trust. ‘I'm going to try to show that not taking the pledge is not political suicide,’ he said.”  (“Janeway: Have to Break the System to Fix it,” by Daniel Barrick, Concord Monitor, Oct. 9. 2008)

“By choosing not to renew his pledge, Senator Janeway is saying that an income tax is back on the table,” said Fergus Cullen, chairman of the New Hampshire Republican Party.  “Senator Janeway’s decision begs the question:  Which other New Hampshire Democrats are also not taking or renewing The Pledge?”

“We’ve seen this pattern before, with Democrats taking The Pledge in order to get elected, and then walking away from it once they got into office.  That’s exactly what Jeanne Shaheen did, for example,” Cullen said.

“Voters deserve to know which side New Hampshire Democrats are on before this election.  Every New Hampshire Democrat candidate needs to state whether or not they are taking The Pledge, and do so now,” said Fergus Cullen, chairman of the New Hampshire Republican Party.
