U.S. Rep. Carol Shea-Porter's campaign blogger has resigned because of comments about Gov. Sarah Palin's youngest child which she made as a PolitickerNH.com user.
The comments also became the focus of a press release issued by the New Hampshire Republican Party.
"I don't think that putting a scarlet letter on your own teenaged and throwing her to the wolves in front of the whole world is something to be proud of. I don't think that using a special needs baby as a prop on late night TV appearances is a value to crow about," Susan Bruce wrote in response to a PolitickerNH.com story announcing Palin's visit to New Hampshire. Bruce left the comment with the title "Middle America Values."
Bruce is also a blogger on Blue Hampshire.
"Barack Obama would fire a member of his staff for making that sort of offensive comment about Governor Palin's infant child, and Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter ought to consider doing the same," said Fergus Cullen, chairman of the New Hampshire Republican Party, in a press release response. "Imagine the outrage on the left if a Republican made a similar comment about the Obama children."
Bruce said in a statement that she was not speaking for Shea-Porter when she wrote the comment.
"During the political season, all of us who care passionately about politics can get wound up and allow our otherwise good judgments to falter," Bruce wrote in a statement. "I recently made a comment on the PolitickerNH blog that falls into this category. To be perfectly clear, at the time, I was not speaking for the Congresswoman but I understand that these lines can be blurry."
Bruce also announced that she was resigning effective immediately.
"I'm resigning from my part -time blogging post, effective immediately, and I'm deeply sorry to cause Congresswoman Shea-Porter any embarrassment," she said. "I'm looking forward to another two years of being her constituent and watching her stand up for the middle class."

As someone who took this
As someone who took this woman to task for her disgusting comments I now no why she thinks the way she does
Ms Susan is a left wing nut job
As if....
Today is a sad day!
It is too bad that the right wing censorship is so strong in NH!
Nothing that Ms Bruce said was untrue!
Does anyone think for a second that EVERY SINGLE ACTION during a campaign is not thought out? I mean the color of a candidates tie is considered!
Gov Palin's use of her son is a well thought out political move! Her young daughter carrying him around at the convention was a staged event designed to attract women and disenfranchised Hilary supporters and we all know it!
I am sure that Sen Obama uses his family in the same way, just as every candidate does!
If the wool is pulled so far over your eyes that you do not believe that then you have no business on a website that is intended for "Political Insiders"
Susan, thank you for calling a spade a spade!
and so...
At least she posts under a real name...
double standards?
I agree it is sad! Freedom of speech only for the right wing? As a voter and NH resident, am I not an insider? I watch and know things.... but do you need a title to make a point here? I would be scared to put my name at this point for fear of being silenced. I am stunned that Susan was silenced for making an observation and having an opinion on it. I saw ALB lead an attack on false statements, was he silenced or told to resign from his title? Double standards are wrong! ALB represent the Bradley side, was he asked to resign? If I were to weight the two statements I can bet you ALB statements would be far heavier!

to answer "Censorship 101", you need to get a life. Attacking Gov Palin's children is way out of line and everyone knows it. Candidates who run for office put their family out in front so citizens can see who they are. If they do not, they are accused of hiding something. You don't like Gov Palin, that is your choice. Leave her children alone and keep your opinions about them to yourself...
Susan Bruce
NH residents should consider themselves lucky to have a voice of truth and reason - and that's what Susan Bruce represents. Everything she said about Gov. Palin is absolutely true. The VP candidate did trot her pregnant and unmarried teenager (and her 'fiance') up on stage at the GOP convention. To call Palin out on that is nothing more than fair. Those taking such umbrage (that's you, Fergus) at Ms. Bruce's reason and truth-telling ought to look into the mirror or, as the old saying goes, "He doth protest too much." Bruce's resignation from the Carol Shea-Porter campaign represents a loss for all NH patriots who value truth and those with the courage to tell it.
Right Wing Hypocrisy
When was the last time a Republican flack resigned or even apologized for possibly offensive political speech?
The double standard is truly breathtaking.
Susan Bruce
Mr. Cullen totally missed the point when he said "Imagine the outrage on the left if a Republican made a similar comment about the Obama children."
Susan Bruce was not discrediting the Palin children, but the mother who would use the plight of her own children to advance her own political agenda.
And you Salme Perry, miss
And you Salme Perry, miss Cullen's point. If one of Mr. Obama's daughter's had become pregnant or he had a child with down-syndrome, and a Republican operative had accused Obama of using them for political gain you all would be outraged! Sarah Palin has her family by her side, just as Obama, McCain and Biden do, just because her family happens to be a little different doesn't mean she is "using the plight of her own children to advance her political agenda".
actually
The Obama family has made it a point to keep their kids in school as much as they can, they are not present at many events.
I asked myself the other day, do the Palin children attend school?
Imagine the outrage I feel right now watching the palin Mccain team try to tear the heart out of the idea of keeping us united. They are fueling hate and division and talk with lies. I cannot believe the lies at this point. Imagine if we were to question Mccains citizenship? That is what the McNuts are doing to Obama. Double standards!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Overreaction
I think Ms. Bruce owes an apology, but does not need to resign. She stepped over the line, but not fatally so, in my opinion.
Sad day?!?! Please...
Here is why most of you who will miss this half-witted tart don't get: Sarah Palin isn't ashamed of her children, she actually loves them. If she was a Democrat, she simply would have had an abortion and taken her child to get one too. Look at Downs birth rates by state; the massive drop in the rate of white Downs babies born in Blue states isn't due to any sort of "cure" or better medical care. It is because they are aborted. I know, you just can't understand why anyone would want to keep a Downs baby, so surely they must be using said baby as a prop. It is called "projection." Look it up.
I don't care which way you
I don't care which way you lean, left right or in between, the fact is her children ARE being used as props. If you think for one minute that anything that happens up on that stage--such as bringing Trig up there--is done for casual reasons rather than invoking sympathy for the campiagn, you're simply a deluded fool. Do us all a favor and shove your head in the sand, watch Fox News, and come back after the election; we don't need you.
Barack Obama did (and continues to do) the same thing. That's politics: dirty, mean, and playing to the lowest common denominator, like Skipper.
Furthermore, forcing this blogger to resign for acknowledging a hard truth is pathetic at best.
Palin and her children
Look the use of the word "props" is not uncalled for - I don't think it's a "projection" of people who fee like children are expendable.
I think this word was used as an illusion that all campaigner's children are "staged" in public appearences and photo opportunities. I think it was a unnecessary word to use, but what's missing from the blogger's piece is exactly why Trig in arm is in any way offensive? Is it because he's special needs? Does Sarah Palin's choice to make Trig visible qualify her as "posing" as "someone who cares about special needs". Palin will have that kid with her for the rest of her life, I think it's fair to say she cares about special needs. I think that Sarah Palin's choice to make Trig highly visible is rather a boon for special needs children rather than Sarah Palin benefiting in any way.
As for Bristol, she represents many young mothers - she depends on the support of her parents, monetarily and otherwise, and if she's compromised alternative future plans in any way -it's silly for a blogger to pretend to know. Let Sarah Palin have that conversation with her daughter.
There are SO many things to find inappropriate with Palin running for office. Her children are not really issues, apart from Bristol being a living representative of "abstinence" education - a fair point, but a small one. Concentrate on the issues we care about - like Palin's schoolgirl recital of countries and issues about which she's just learned. Her lack of sensitivity to racial issues, as evidence by her failure to rebuke racists comments about Muslims and Arabs.
If Palin and the republicans
If Palin and the republicans are mad that someone commented on parading Palin's children around, maybe they shouldn't treat a pregnant child and a special needs child like they are whores or eye candy. They are children and need to be in school, not used to promote their mother to a job.
Maskin, whose head is in the sand?
"...the fact is her children ARE being used as props. " Fact? I guess your definition of fact is anything you believe to be true.
"... is done for casual reasons rather than invoking sympathy for the campaign, you're simply a deluded fool." I'm the deluded fool? How about this: she isn't looking for sympathy; she actually loves her child and is proud of her son. There are actually people out there who don't see have a Down syndrome child as burden or curse, something worthy of sympathy.
"... shove your head in the sand, watch Fox News, and come back after the election; we don't need you."
"... you're simply a deluded fool."
"...dirty, mean, and playing to the lowest common denominator,..."
Sorry, Maskin, who is it that is playing to the lowest common denominator? Who is that feels the need to hurl invective to try to make a point? All I did was point out that, although apparently unconceivable to you, some people love their children and are proud of them regardless of what others think. It is a fact that Down’s births have declined. It is a fact that during the same time frame the ability to determine the whether an unborn child has Down syndrome has improved. It is a fact that blue states typically have higher abortion rates. I didn’t insult you or any other poster. I just pointed out the facts.
And lastly…”Furthermore, forcing this blogger to resign for acknowledging a hard truth is pathetic at best.” Susan Bruce was not forced to resign, it was a choice. Isn’t “choice” something you support?
Skippy Todd
Given that you like calling women "half witted tarts" why would anyone waste their time reading your dull witted insecure male commentary?
Pinko
You apparently read it. Not well, but you read it. I referred to one woman, Susan Bruce, as a half-witted tart, for her maligning of another woman. Does that make Susan’s blog "dull witted insecure male commentary?" Maybe you know something about Susan that I don’t.
I guess, though, my input just doesn't measure up against your informative, sharp-tongued rebuke. Please, please teach me to be like you!
aw, poor lad
you'll never be like me - you lack the sufficient wit. Resorting to misogynistic name calling isn't amusing, droll, or even interesting. It's an over used tactic of the insecure male. Go buy a red sports car.
Oh Pinko, your sympathy is so misplaced
Go buy a red sports car! That is witty, you are so right! Would you mind if I drop you an email next time I need a witty come back?
Actually, what is really funny is your use of words you just don't understand (sad, really). Misogyny, for instance. If you want real misogyny just look at what some of your charming friends, including the aforementioned Ms. Bruce, have to say about the lovely Sarah Palin.
It is funny, and again sad, that "insecure" is a word that seems to be on the tip of your virtual tongue. Why is it that insecurity is so in the forefront of you mind? You might want to look up the word I mentioned earlier: projection.
Susan the Bruce
Like the wackos Buckley and Sullivan before her, Susan the Bruce just cannot keep her mouth shut can she?
Ding dong, you know the rest.. LOL
We are starting to find out that liberals are the most intolerant, racist, and sexist people on the planet - imagine being offended by the sight of a pregnant girl, (big deal!) or a special child? Shameful.
Their mother should have put them in a closet!? Since when does someone get chosen to be VP running mate and not bring her family on the podium with her?
Ridiculous.
This election the Dems have offered us the most extremist and racist candidate in history. His rhetoric has proven to be more divisive and destructive than any other. First he hires goon squads to jail people who speak out against him in Ohio, PA, Missouri and Vermont....
http://www.rense.com/general83/over.htm
And now he has supporters firing on the McCain bus and beating up women in the subway with their own campaign signs!
http://www.red-alerts.com/homeland-security/mccain-bus-fired-on-by-obama...
If I recall, while campaigning for Benson, one of Lynch's violent supporters whacked me over the head with a sign too. They crushed my toes with their boots.
This is the kind of people liberals are....hypocrites, violent, intolerant.
Can't wait for the Obama thugocracy!
