Sununu's Election-Year Flip-Flop on Foreclosure Prevention Act too Late for Many New Hampshire Families

(Concord) - Senator John E. Sununu pulled an election-year flip-flop yesterday, reversing his position on the Foreclosure Prevention Act five weeks after voting against even allowing the Senate to consider the same bill. During those five weeks, more New Hampshire families have faced foreclosure, and the mortgage crisis has continued to spread across the economy.

"Sununu had the chance to stand up for New Hampshire families five weeks ago, and instead he abandoned them in favor of party loyalty," said New Hampshire Democratic Party Chair Ray Buckley. "In the last five weeks while Sununu has tested the political waters, more New Hampshire families have faced foreclosure, and more New Hampshire families have been forced out onto the street. New Hampshire needs a Senator who stands up for the middle class and who shows leadership the first time, not political calculation the second."

From 2006 to 2007, foreclosures increased by 96% in New Hampshire. [Union Leader, 2/18/08] The New Hampshire Housing Finance Authority estimated there will be close to 3,000 foreclosures in New Hampshire this year, up from 2071 last year. [NH-NHFA, March, 2008]
