Hodes says Bush should not attend Olympic opening ceremonies

Congressman Paul Hodes (D-Concord) says President Bush should not attend the opening ceremonies of the upcoming Olympic Games.

The games are taking place in Beijing and have become the center controversy over China's human rights record and the recent crisis in Tibet.

Calling China's human rights record "abysmal," Hodes called on Bush to boycott the opening ceremonies.

"Something needs to be done at the highest levels of our government to express our concern and exert moral leadership," Hodes said. "The President boycotting the opening ceremonies would be an important symbol for the United States to exert moral leadership and express outrage of China's past human rights' abuses."

Earlier this week, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Bush should consider a boycott.

"The idea on the table of just not attending the opening ceremonies is very interesting," Pelosi told The Politco.

Isn't there a housing and financial crisis going on and a war that Rep. Hodes should be paying more attention to?

Does the 2nd district now include Tibet?

I am a Republican and I

I am a Republican and I COMPLETELY agree with Hodes on this. A Congressman should be concerned with world afairs and China's atrocious record of human rights is something to worry about.

What Congressman Hodes should be worried about is our fiscal and national security and in this case clearly falls within both.

You mean sick of this whole story as in sick of the more than 1 million people that have been murdered in Tibet. Sorry to bother you though, I know reading is hard on you!
