Claremont Mayor Scott Pope resigned from his position during a heated city council meeting Wednesday night. Or did he?
The debate centered on a procedural vote to appoint Councilor Paul Lacasse to the city planning board. Pope voted against a motion to reconsider and when councilors continued to debate the vote, Pope stood up, grabbed his papers, and asked the Council to accept his resignation.
Stunned, no one said anything to his resignation and Assistant Mayor Deborah Cutts ran the rest of the meeting.
The question now, is who is in charge. Pope told WMUR: "I've been told they didn't accept my resignation by many of them. So that's what I mean. I'll talk to the City Council to make sure everything is set. I've always worked hard for the city, and if they want me to keep doing it, I will certainly do it." Cutts is now serving as the interim Mayor.
The issue will be figured out at the next city council meeting next Wednesday.
