Clegg after announcement speech: Photo by James Pindell
CONCORD -- Citing his humble roots, State Sen. Bob Clegg (R-Hudson) announced he will run for Congress in the Second Congressional District.
"People want leaders and they don't want those who intend of dividing and tearing apart our country," Clegg said to about 50 people at the New Hampshire Political Library. "They simply ask that we leave them with a nation that is just a little bit better that we found it."
After serving eight years in the state House of Representatives, Clegg is now in his fourth term in the State Senate where he serves as the Assistant Minority Leader.
He began the speech talking about his humble roots of shining shoes for Nashua politicians.
He joins two Republicans Jim Steiner and Jennifer Horn in a September primary for the chance to take on freshman Democrat Paul Hodes.
When asked about why Hodes must be defeated, Clegg asked, "what has he done."
In a statement Hodes said he was focused on Washington and not on the race yet.
"There will be a time for politics, but right now my entire focus remains on doing my job to represent the people of New Hampshire," Hodes said.
Clegg will likely draw on his own personal wealth to help fund his race for Congress in a way that none of his competitors can.
