The GOP launched its own assault on the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, U.S. Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.), in response to New Hampshire state Democrats' attack on the renewable energy voting record of Obama's presumptive Republican counterpart, U.S. Sen. John McCain.
Earlier this morning, Republicans issued a statement criticizing Obama's involvement with the 2005 energy reform bill. The legislation received little acclaim from newspaper editorial boards and government officials, and U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) condemned Obama for his support of the bill while campaigning for the Democratic presidential nomination.
In 2005, McCain had voted against the bill, stating that the "bill does little to address the immediate energy crisis we face in this country." He also cited "handouts to big business and oil companies" as reasons why he did not support the legislation.
The statement was intended to counter the New Hampshire Democratic Party's own statement and video released today, in preparation for McCain's visit to the state tomorrow.
