The PolitickerNH.com list of the state’s MOST POWERFUL LAW FIRMS identifies the law firms in the state that carry the most political power – the most sway over the business of government and politics. We looked for the firms with the combination of political influence, marquee names, and access to policymakers at different levels of government. These lawyers understand how the inside political game is played and how to get results for their clients. As always, our lists are subjective – we welcome your comments.
Description:Devine plays a part in nearly everything in New Hampshire politics. Sure, there is the former Republican gubernatorial nominee Ovide Lamontagne and the fact he represented Republicans in the phone-jamming lawsuit. There are also Democrats like Paula Rogers, the former Insurance Commissioner, Bob Dunn and Teresa Rosenberger. But consider the recent presidential primary. Devine's office was a stop for many presidential candidates. One attorney was a state co-chair for John McCain while another took a leave to run Mitt Romney's campaign. Alums include two of the current five members of the NH Supreme Court, former Governor Steve Merrill, and Rich Sigel, who served as chief of staff for both Governors John Lynch and Jeanne Shaheen. |
Description:Billy Shaheen may have seen his status as Democratic kingmaker drop this year, but he is still one of the state's biggest players. Now his wife is running in one of the biggest U.S. Senate races in the country and his former law partner Paul Hodes is seeking re-election to Congress. |
Description:If there is such a thing as powerful by association consider this firm. Gov. John Lynch remains very popular in polls and some of his best friends are sitting in this firm like Kate Hanna and Alan Reische. There is also Bruce Berke, lobbyist Liz Murphy, and even the attorney general's mother Kathy Veracco. Republican Brad Cook still writes his political column for the New Hampshire Business Review, but his style of Republicanism might be well out of style with the current state party. |
Description:Former Attorney General/RNC Committeeman/adviser to presidential campaigns Tom Rath's firm is inherently political. Besides Rath are Chris Sullivan and Ann McLane Kuster's deep Democratic ties. |
Description:This heavily Democratic firm has the former Concord Marty Gross, the best friend of both Al Gore and Lynch Deb Butler, Marty Honigberg, and up and comer Jay Surdukowski. |
Description:Chris Gallagher is an old school "Friend of Bill" Clinton and with him is Lisa Shapiro. Republican consultants Rich Killion and Erik Taylor also have their firm affiliated with them. |
Description:Kathy Sullivan may no longer be the state Democratic Party chair but that doesn't mean she has gone anywhere in politics. When Bill Clinton needs a private place for an hour he comes to this law firm in downtown Manchester. Gene Van Loan is also an expert on education funding. |
Description:As long as Chuck Douglas, the former Congressman and former Supreme Court justice, remains relevant so does this firm. |
Description:This large firm does boast marquee clients and even Senate Majority Leader Joe Foster on the payroll. |
Description:Nixon Peabody has a national reach. In Manchester they also have heavy-hitter Republicans like former federal prosecutor David Vicinanzo and former Gordon Humphrey aide Gordon MacDonald. |
