Rich Killion, a Romney New Hampshire strategist, said former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney abandoned his presidential bid today because of his desire to unite the Republican party behind a candidate.
"Gov. Romney believes that by continuing on he would only only forestall the launch of a national campaign and thereby aid the Democrats," Killion said in a statement.
Killion added, "Republicans cannot afford to be divided in the general election and cannot allow a Commander-in-Chief to be like Senators Clinton or Senator Obama-individuals who have made known their intentions regarding Iraq and the War on Terror-retreat and defeat."
This morning at the Conservative Political Action Conference Romney said "I disagree with Senator McCain on a number of issues, as you know. But I agree with him on doing whatever it takes to be successful in Iraq."
