SUNUNU VOTES TO MODERNIZE FOREIGN
INTELLIGENCE SURVEILLANCE ACT
Senate passes six-year extension to legislation
WASHINGTON, DC – United States Senator John Sununu (R-NH) today (2/12) released the following statement regarding Senate passage of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act Amendments (S. 2248). Sununu supported the bipartisan bill, which passed by a vote of 68 - 29, and now moves to a committee of conference with the House of Representatives.
“This bill authorizes the surveillance of potential terrorists and other national security threats overseas, but provides clear protections for any United States citizens who may be affected by the collection of this intelligence. Equally important, the legislation does not allow the targeting of any individuals within the United States without a warrant.
“Our intelligence community must have the tools it needs to continue essential surveillance activity overseas. But, whether at home or abroad, I will continue to lead efforts to protect the civil liberties of any United States citizens affected by such activity.”
