GREGG AND SUNUNU HELP SECURE $5.1 BILLION IN CRITICAL LIHEAP FUNDS

New Hampshire set to receive at least $34.1 million

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senators Judd Gregg and John Sununu (R-NH) announced that the Fiscal Year 2009 Continuing Resolution, which was approved by the Senate today, contains $5.1 billion for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP).  This amount nearly doubles Congress’ commitment to funding this critical program from last year and funds the program at the fully authorized level, the largest amount ever provided in one year for LIHEAP, which helps low-income individuals, families and seniors afford their heating bills.  Under this funding formula for LIHEAP, New Hampshire will receive at least $34.1 million in block grant funding, as well as some amount of contingency funds which are released at the discretion of the Administration.  The Fiscal Year 2009 Continuing Resolution is a measure that will fund the federal government through March 2009.  It is expected to be signed into law by the President in the near future.

CONCORD--The rising costs of home heating oil has forced Gov. John Lynch (D-Hopkinton) and legislative leaders to call for special legislation to help residents deal with historic increases in energy prices.

Surrounded by a bi-partisan group of legislators, Lynch announced that the proposed legislation would allow the state to advance $10 million from state coffers to programs that offer help to low-income residents. The money would allow the state to continue serving the 35,000 families that rely on heating assistance from the state. If Congress raises the amount it gives to New Hampshire for home heating assistance, from the current $27.5 million, the state would use the extra money to pay off the $10 million advance.
