Named for New Hampshire’s Michelle Morse, new law ensures that college students have access to medical leave

WASHINGTON, DC – United States Senators John Sununu and Judd Gregg hailed the signing of “Michelle’s Law” by President Bush today (10/9).   The new federal law, which both Senators championed, increases access to medical coverage for college students by providing for the extension of existing health insurance coverage to dependant college students for up to one year in the event of a medically necessary leave of absence.

Washington, DC--- Congressman Paul Hodes praised Senate passage of HR 2851 “Michelle’s Law” by unanimous consent. The bill would allow seriously ill or injured college students to take up to one year of medical leave without losing their health insurance.  The measure now goes to President Bush for his approval.

OF FEDERAL MICHELLE’S LAW LEGISLATION

Bill to ensure college students have access

to medical leave heads to President’s desk

WASHINGTON, DC – United States Senators John Sununu and Judd Gregg (R-NH) today (9/25) announced Senate passage of the federal version of Michelle’s Law.  This legislation would provide the extension of existing health insurance coverage to dependant college students for up to one year in the event of a medically necessary leave of absence. The bill, which was approved unanimously by the Senate Thursday, now heads to the President’s desk to be signed into law.

The ad tells the story of Michelle Morse, a Plymouth State student who had to continue attend classes after being diagnosed with cancer because if she would have lost her health insurance if she dropped out of college.  Hodes helped pass "Michelle's law" which allows students to continue to be covered under their family's health insurance even if they are not full-time students.

House of Representatives Passes Michelle’s Law

Washington, DC--- Today, the House of Representatives passed H.R. 2851, Michelle’s Law on a voice vote sponsored by Congressman Paul Hodes of New Hampshire and Congressman Mike Castle of Delaware. The bill would allow seriously ill or injured college students to take up to one year of medical leave without losing their health insurance.

Senators call on HELP Committee to act on bill to ensure college students have access to medical leave

WASHINGTON- U.S. Senators Judd Gregg and John Sununu (R-NH) today urged Senate leaders to take swift action on their Michelle’s Law legislation (S. 400).  The bill, introduced in 2007 by Sununu and co-sponsored by Gregg, would provide the extension of existing health insurance coverage to dependant college students for up to one year in the event of a medically necessary leave of absence.

Hodes Passes Two Bills Out of Full Committee Today

Michelle’s Law, Veterans’ Ombudsman Legislation Pass Committees on Bipartisan Vote

Washington, DC—Two bills sponsored by Congressman Paul Hodes were passed out full committee today. The Energy and Commerce Committee passed H.R. 2851, Michelle’s Law, to allow seriously ill or injured college students to take up to one year of medical leave without losing their health insurance. The measure was passed by a vote of 40-0-2.
