However, U.S. Sen. John Sununu's (R-Waterville Valley) campaign says that the ad is correct and says Shaheen is citing the wrong document.

Credit default swap market exploded due to lack of oversight, pushing our economy further toward disaster

(Manchester, NH) - As part of his long record opposing Wall Street oversight, John Sununu voted to allow the enormous credit default swap market to go entirely without oversight, a market the has ballooned to over $70 trillion per year and played a huge role in the collapse of insurance giant AIG. Sununu voted in favor of former Senator Phil Gramm's Commodity Futures Modernization Act, which explicitly exempted credit default swaps from any regulation or oversight.

NHGOP CALLS OUT NEW HAMSPHIRE DEMOCRATS’ HYPOCRISY

CONCORD – Today, the New Hampshire Democrats and the Shaheen Campaign accused Senator John Sununu of “lay[ing] the groundwork for our current financial crisis,” by supporting the bipartisan Financial Modernization Act of 1999.

Shaheen also used the opportunity to criticize her rival, U. S. Sen. John Sununu (R-Waterville Valley), criticisms the Sununu campaign calls, "empty political rhetoric."

Shaheen purposed that the oversight system be streamlined, strengthen liquidity and disclosure requirements, and regulate financial institutions based on the services they offer.

(Manchester, NH) - John Sununu hosted a conference call yesterday to brag about his 12 year record in Washington even while Wall Street crumbled and insurance giant AIG went nearly bankrupt.
