Senate District 21 has an opportunity to be an open seat if Democratic Senator Iris Estabrook decides to hang it up. The district, which includes Dover, Durham, Epping, Lee, Rollingsford is a very difficult seat with a strong Democratic registration advantage.
In 2006 Estabrook had a free ride as the nominee on both the Democratic and Republican side. In 2002 and 2004 Estabrook won the seat winning 54% of the vote in both races. If she decided to seek reelection she appears to be facing little if no opposition again. But with an open seat the Republicans will probably try to recruit a strong candidate to enter the race.
Who should the Republicans recruit to run in 21st senate district? One name that comes quickly to mind is Wendy Stanley Jones. Stanley Jones, a long time Exeter activist, now lives in Durham and is a candidate that would have strong appeal in to independents in this district. But according to sources close to Stanley Jones that is unlikely to happen.
Another potential candidate is the lone Republican state Representative from the district, Ron Nowe. Nowe has long been a popular Republican in Epping, but Epping will only represent about 10% of the vote which is equal to about one ward of Dover.
Dover Republican Dan Philbrick was the last Republican to run for this seat in 2004 when he received 46% of the vote and would have the best name recognition district wide. But the conservative may have reached his high water mark in 2004.
Another potential candidate is David Scott. Scott made a name for himself when he filed a law suit against the city of Dover to open up the books, requesting salaries of municipal employees. Scott then went on to defeat Matt Mayberry in 2005 and handily won reelection in a 3-way election in 2007.
A dark horse candidate may be former Dover Mayor Charles Reynolds who narrowly lost to Scott Myers in 2007. Reynolds would more than likely be stronger in Dover than any other Republican candidate and would.

It's a presidential year. Thousands more voters will be voting in this 63% Democratic performance district. Iris Estabrook is a great senator who will be there as long as she wants but no one would ever call her a good campaigner. She barely campaigned each time. Any Democrat running to replace her have to commit to be part of the senate election program - resulting in a Democratic victory of substantial proportions.

Isn't anyone else gettig
Isn't anyone else gettig sick of Iris needing to be talked into running year after year. I find it hard to believe that there isn't another democrat who would run for that seat. Maybe Iris should let go of her ego and step down to clear the way for someone who really wants it.
